Almost Perfect-Perfect if you're short!

Reviewed by HighAltitudeRockStar, 2010-01-18

This is a great jacket, for the weight it is very warm (to single digit temps with layering, subzero temps would be pushing it). Compresses very small, the size of a litre nalgene bottle. I usually only wear a lightweight longsleeve top under it and am comfortable down to freezing, at which point a heavyweight undershirt comes on. The construction is very sturdy, Ive snagged it on sharp plants in the desert I thought had torn it, but it shakes sharp/rough stuff off every time. The reason I call it almost perfect is the cut should be like an inch or two longer vertically around the waist. Unless you're very short the jacket will sit well above your waistline letting cold air in. The jacket does have a cinch at the waist that helps, but it still sucks in a high wind. Other than that, it's a keeper!

Great Price and Really warm

I wanted a Down Jacket as it was colder then usual here for a bit. I didnt want something overly "puffy" so I went with this one. Comes with a stuff sack and is very well made and most importantly WARM.

Great Jacket

Mountain Hardwear Sub Zero Jacket

Excellent. I have been looking through the web for different brands and models, different fills (800,700,650) and I think it is really worth the price (which is also very affordable).

Cold weather star

I bought this mostly for around town, early morning and higher elevation hikes. Works great down to 20 degrees with just a long sleeve T underneath. If I wear a little warmer layer, I'm warm down to zero. I haven't had opportunity to wear it in colder temps yet. Medium fits very well, with room to layer underneath (I'm 5'7" 130) Also -- I've only worn it in a dry climate.

I'd hightly recommend this for low - medium intensity activity for pretty cold, dry conditions. The "cocobello" or whatever it's called is more brown than it appears on the site (I thought it would be reddish)

Very good buy

I bought this jacket after the weather got below 15 degrees before Halloween in preparation for what is looking to be a pretty brutal winter in Western North Carolina. I would recommend this jacket to anyone looking for a lightweight down jacket for backpacking and hiking. The outer-shell seems a bit flimsy for everyday use, and I'm constantly making sure I don't snag it against anything when I'm wearing it around town. It comes with a handy stuff-sack and packs fairly small, making it ideal for those who want to bring something along on backpacking trips in case the temperature drops. I wouldn't say that this is an end-all high performance jacket, as I'm sure that if the temperature dropped much below zero it would quickly lose effectiveness. However, if you live in the 48 continental states, this make for an excellent choice for winter use when the thermometer drops below 32. However, those planning Alaskan or Siberian sojourns make want to spend more on something a bit more rugged and proven.
